Georgian and Armenian officials have highly praised the "traditionally developed firm and close friendship” between the neighboring countries and peoples.

Georgia’s Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze paid a two-day visit to Yerevan where he met Armenia's President Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan and Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian.

This was Janelidze’s first official visit there, which also saw the Georgian Minister be the first guest in the new building of Armenia’s Foreign Ministry.

"Georgia and Armenia are close friends. This friendship rests on historic ties between our peoples,” Janelidze said following bilateral meetings.

Armenia’s Nalbandian confirmed this and said "relations between Armenia and Georgia symbolize history-proven friendship based on mutual respect.”

The Armenian Foreign Minister also stressed Georgia’s support for efforts to a resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was important.

"I informed my counterpart of the recent developments in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution process. In this respect, Georgia’s support to the [OSCE] Minsk Group, the only format having an international mandate to act as a mediator, is important in the efforts toward reaching an exclusively peaceful solution,” he said.

The Georgian Minister attached importance to the fact that although Armenia and Georgia were members of various foreign integration formats and had different membership intentions, it didn’t affect bilateral relations.

"Today, among other things, we talked about possibilities to use these differences to strengthen our cooperation and for joint projects”, Janelidze said.
