Making history: Georgia - winning nation of European wrestling championship

Georgia’s national wrestling team is European champion, for the first time in history. 

Georgia triumphed at the European Wrestling Championships 2016 held in Riga, Latvia.

The nation received six medals; two gold, one silver and three bronze.

Georgia's new European freestyle wrestling champions are:

  • Vladimer Khinchegashvili (61kg) and
  • Geno Petriashvili (125kg).

The runner-up was: 

  • Davit Tlashadze (70kg).

The bronze medal winners were:

  • Iakob Makarashvili (74kg);
  • Elizbar Odikadze (97kg); and
  • Davit Marsagishvili (86kg).

These results of the individual Georgian wrestlers ensured the nation earned the highest overall score, and become the leader of the team competition.

Georgia gained a collective score of 59 points,  followed by Russia with 54 and Ukraine on 51 points.
