Georgian fashion designer Demna Gvasalia has been honoured with two prestigious awards at a star-studded ceremony involving thousands of distinguished guests of the British Fashion Council Fashion Awards 2016.

Monday's awards ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London featured some of the most famous contemporary fashion figures including American model Gigi Hadid, editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine Anna Wintour and designer Tom Ford.

The young designer was named International Ready-to-Wear Designer for his creative work as creative director of famous Paris-based fashion house Balenciaga.

Appointed to the position little over a year ago, Gvasalia presented his first collection for the label in March this year.

In addition to the personal award, Gvasalia's work was also recognised when the International Urban Luxury Brand prize went to the French brand Vetements, which is led by the Georgian along with seven other designers.

The creative approach of the label's designers received international critical acclaim. Vogue magazine called Vetements "hands-down [the] coolest thing going in Paris fashion”.

The London occasion also featured Gvasalia's brother Guram – who also worked for Vetements – as among the nominees for the International Business Leader Award.

As well as honouring global fashion talent, the fashion Awards 2016 also served as the "inaugural annual fundraiser gala" to raise money and fund scholarships for talented young fashion designers.

The British Fashion Council served to promote leading British designers and honour global industry professionals within its annual awards.
