These words belong to Georgia's President Giorgi Margvelashvili, who issued a statement a short time ago to congratulate Donald Trump on his victory in the United States (US) presidential election.

"Your mission as the president takes place in this essential period when the entire world and humanity faces new challenges, closer connections and growing threats that further impose the highest responsibility on us to protect and maintain universal values as freedom, democracy and peace,” read Margvelashvili’s open letter to Trump.

As the role of the United States in ensuring stability and security worldwide had always been unique, I am confident that through strong American leadership we will witness a safer, more secure and more prosperous world.”

Margvelashvili said shared values were the basis of the historically friendly relations between Georgia and the US, and bilateral ties could be found in a number of ways.

He added Georgia and the US had a strong military relationship where Georgian soldiers served shoulder-to-shoulder with US forces to maintain stability worldwide.

Our unity is essential to a peaceful future for our states and humanity,” Margvelashvili said.

The Georgian President noted the US showed strong support for Georgia and with every step towards advancement, Georgia felt "enormous assistance and courage” from the American people and government.

We are grateful and highly value the US support given to strengthen our country’s statehood, democratic development, unwavering stance of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as our European and Euro-Atlantic aspiration,” Margvelashvili’s letter read.

Georgia's President added he was "eager and very much looking forward to enhancing the strategic partnership" between Georgia and the US under the new presidency, that the two countries have forged in a diverse range of areas of cooperation.”

"I remain confident that with our joint efforts, strong ties as well as long-lasting Georgian-American friendship will further enhance and become ever stronger for the mutual benefit of our nations,” Margvelashvili said.

He then address Trump directly:
