Russian guards stationed at the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) between Georgia and its breakaway Tskhinvali region (South Ossetia) have illegally detained three Georgian citizens in the past three days.

All of the detained men were accused of illegally crossing the so-called border.

The illegal detentions took place on October 21, 22 and 23.

The detained men were residents of Karkushaani, Didi Mejvriskhevi and Kirbali villages, which are all situated along the Russian occupation line.

One of the three detainees was Ilia Takadze, 28. He went into the forest near his village to collect firewood but didn’t return home yesterday.

Another man was Malkhaz Lezhava, 34, who was kidnapped from the territory near his own house along the ABL.

The third man has not been identified.

Neighbours of all three detained men said none of them crossed the ABL and they all were detained while on Georgian-controlled land.

Authorities understood the men had been taken to a detention centre in Tskhinvali and had been charged with illegally crossing the so-called border.

Illegal detention of Georgian citizens by Russian guards is common practice near Tskhinvali ABL. Detainees are usually released once their family paid a fine.
