Spain is applauding Georgia for hosting free and democratic elections on Saturday.

The Government of Spain welcomes the smooth manner in which the legislative elections held on Saturday, 8 October, unfolded in Georgia,” the country’s Foreign Ministry wrote on its website.

Spain shared the preliminary conclusions of the OSCE Election Observation Mission, which considered the elections in Georgia were free and democratic.

The Ministry noted Spain condemned the various violent incidents that took place during the elections, but noted overall the elections were held in a peaceful and fair environment.

[Spain] trusts that the electoral recommendations identified by observers will be taken into consideration in the future,” the Ministry said.

The Spanish Government offered its congratulations to the candidates elected after Saturday's vote, and hoped the new Parliament would successfully tackle the pending challenges and tasks facing the country.

Spain's Foreign Ministry also declared its interest in "extending the relations of friendship and cooperation and stepping up the ties between Georgia and the European Union through the full application of the Association Agreement".
