For the next seven days Georgia will bask in the sweet smell of wine as the country celebrates national wine week.

Starting today people around the country are invited to celebrate Georgian Wine Week and attend any or all of the various wine events taking place over the next seven days, such as wine tasting, wine tours and presentations.

The festivities are taking place all over the country, but particularly Georgia’s wine region Kakheti.

Earlier today a new facility named 'Qvevri Workshop' opened in Ikalto, Kakheti region. It was a central event of Georgian Wine Week and showed visitors about the historic use of qvevri (a large, ancient Georgian winemaking vessel) in traditional Georgian winemaking. Also at Ikalto today a photo exhibition and awarding ceremony of monastery wines was also held.

Construction of a multi-million GEL facility started last year in Ikalto to restore the country’s ancient winemaking tradition and develop the region’s historic, cultural, educational and touristic potential.

Meanwhile in Telavi today people can visit one of the many pavilions and taste a selection of locally-made Georgian wine.

Georgian Wine Week was organised by Georgia’s Ministry of Agriculture and the Georgian National Wine Agency.

This will be the third annual Georgian Wine Week.

Meanwhile, the grape harvest is currently in full swing in Kakheti and in other grape growing regions, where more than 10,000 grape growers have sold 62,000 tonnes of grapes, earning 53.8 million GEL.
