Several minutes ago Georgia’s freestyle wrestler Vladimer Khinchegashvili won a gold medal at the Rio Olympic Games, bringing the country's total medal tally to six
This was Georgia’s second gold medal won at the Rio summer Olympic Games. It came three days after Lasha Talakhadze won gold in weightlifting and four other Georgian athletes won silver and bronze medals.
Khinchegashvili, 25, competed in the 57kg category at this year’s Olympic Games. He is from Georgia’s eastern Gori region.
He was the 2015 world champion for his weight class and world champion runner-up in 2014.
At the 2016 European Wrestling Championships he beat world champion 61kg Haji Aliyev and became the new European champion.
The other Georgian athletes who have won medals at the Rio Olympic Games were Varlam Liparteliani who won silver in judo; Shmagi Bolkvadze who won bronze in Greco-Roman wrestling, Lasha Shavdatuashvili who won bronze in judo and Irakli Turmanidze also bronze in weightlifting.
