Gov’t offers financial reward to Rio Olympic winners

The Government of Georgia will financially reward athletes who won medals at the Rio Summer Olympic Games. 

The decree, issued by the Government, stated winners of an Olympic gold in weightlifting Lasha Talakhadze and Vladimer Khinchegashvili  in freestyle wrestling would receive  $75,000 USD, winner of the Olympic silver in judo Varlam Liparteliani would receive $45,000 USD and the three winners of an Olympic bronzan medal will get $30,000 USD each. 

The three Georgian athletes who won bronze medals were Shmagi Bolkvadze in Greco-Roman wrestling, Lasha Shavdatuashvili in judo and Irakli Turmanidze in weightlifting. 

This year 40 athletes – 30 men and 10 women – competed in 13 disciplines at the Rio Olympics.
