Secretary General will visit Georgia to demonstrate NATO’s “strong support”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has announced he will visit Georgia this autumn.
Today at the second day of the Warsaw Summit, NATO leaders agreed a set of decisions to project stability beyond the Alliance’s borders.
We have recognised the progress Georgia has achieved on its path to membership,” Stoltenberg said.
He added Allies were faithful to the promise they made at the 2008 Bucharest Summit, where they said Georgia would one day become a member of NATO.
The Secretary General stressed NATO had a "firm position” towards Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
"That’s the reason why we implemented different elements in our Substantial Package,” Stoltenberg said.
We will continue our strong political and practical support for Georgia.”
I will visit Georgia together with the North Atlantic Council this autumn and this will demonstrate NATO’s strong support for Georgia, its territorial integrity and its reforms that the country carries out to become a member.”
Meanwhile Stoltenberg announced the next NATO Summit would be held in Brussels, Belgium in 2017.
Georgia will continue to participate in a NATO mission in Afghanistan, as the Alliance has decided to extend its Resolute Support Mission beyond 2016.
Allies vow more support for Georgia
This evening the first North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)-Georgia Commission meeting was held during the Alliance’s Warsaw Summit, where allied foreign ministers recognised Georgia’s vast progress towards Euro-Atlantic integration and promised more support to boost the country’s self-defence capabilities.
NATO: "We welcome the significant progress realised since 2008. Georgia’s relationship with the Alliance contains all the practical tools to prepare for eventual membership."
President of the United States Barack Obama says NATO will do more to help Georgia strengthen its defence capacity. Obama spoke at a press conference after day one of the NATO Warsaw Summit.
Georgia’s capital Tbilisi is preparing to welcome the North Atlantic Council chaired by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg this afternoon. The NATO top official will chair a meeting of the NATO-Georgia Commission.
"Allies are determined to increase and intensify the level of NATO’s support for Georgia,” says Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. "As an aspirant country, Georgia has all the practical tools to prepare for NATO membership."
