The British Embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia has hosted a special reception honouring the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

Georgia’s Prime Minister and other officials attended the event last night, hosted by British Ambassador to Georgia Alexandra Hall Hall at the British Embassy in Krtsanisi.

The date of the Queen’s birth was April 21 however her birthday is officially celebrated on a Saturday each June, in summer when the British weather is nicer.

The birthday celebrations of British monarchs are typically held on a day that is not their actual birthday. The tradition is linked to the unreliable British weather and allows the Royal family to hold a grand royal birthday parade outdoors when the weather is more reliable.

Speaking at last night’s celebration PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili congratulated the people of the United Kingdom (UK) on the special day and highlighted the long and friendly relations between Georgia and the UK.

'Georgia-UK relations are progressing well and a big part of this is because of the Ambassador’s hard work,' Georgia's PM said about Ambassador Hall Hall. Photo by the Prime Minister's webpage.

Kvirikashvili stressed the UK had stood by Georgia for many years on and was one of the first nations that recognised Georgia’s independence in April 1992.

The UK is a strong supporter of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Georgian and British soldiers are standing shoulder-to-shoulder, serving in foreign missions,” Kvirikashvili said at the celebration.

He also congratulated Ambassador Hall Hall for her contribution to furthering this bilateral relationship and wished her future success, as her term in Georgia expired in August.

Georgia-UK relations are progressing well and a big part of this is because of the Ambassador’s hard work. I sincerely want to thank her for her vast efforts,” Kvirikashvili stated.

A portion of his speech was on a more humerous note, as he joked Georgia had "organised” it to rain so the British people in Tbilisi would feel at home when they celebrated their Queen’s birthday.

He also said he hoped the UK would remain within the European Union.
