Georgia’s President believes the country needs greater support from the European Union (EU) to successfully finalise its visa liberalisation process, which will allow Georgian citizens the right to travel to the Schengen Zone without a visa.

Georgia’s President Giorgi Margvelashvili is today in Strasbourg, France for a working visit.

This afternoon the Georgian leader met European Parliament (EP) President Martin Schulz.

"Today we need the EU’s support to successfully finalise the visa liberalisation process that we began three years ago,” Margvelashvili told Schulz.
"We will be grateful if you personally get involved to support the right and quick discussion of this process at the EP.”

Georgia’s State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration David Bakradze, who is part of the Georgian delegation accompanying Margvelashvili, said at the meeting Schulz stressed there was unity within the EP regarding Georgia’s visa liberalisation.

Bakradze said Schulz expressed his readiness to speed up discussions within the EP so Georgia’s visa liberalisation process can end quickly and the country be granted a visa free travel regime.
