Georgia will widely promote its economic interests to foreign nations over the next 18 months, focusing on economic diplomacy within the country's foreign policy.
Today Georgia’s Economy Minister Dimitry Kumsishvili announced commercial attaches will be appointed in the Embassies of Georgia abroad to inform Georgia's partners about the country's goals. Kumsishvili said a draft law had been created and was ready to be presented at the next Governmental Meeting.
A commercial attache is a person posted to a foreign embassy to promote the economic interests of their home country.
The commercial attaches will be appointed by the Ministry of Economy but will be subordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We believe appointing commercial attaches in countries where our trade turnover is very active,” said Kumsishvili.
The Government believed economic diplomacy was an important tool for attracting more Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) in Georgia, support Georgia’s export potential, encourage the use of modern technologies, find proper foreign partners for local small and medium-sized businesses and protect Georgian business abroad.
To achieve this the Government created an Action Plan which brought the state and the private sector together to reach joint goals.
Today Georgia’s Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze met with members of the local business society and presented to them the country's 2016-2017 Action Plan to develop economic diplomacy in Georgia
Meanwhile, Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili also accented the need to develop economic diplomacy when he was appointed as the Foreign Minister of Georgia in September 2015. Since then the Government has been working hard to create this Action Plan and establish specific steps to achieve new goals.
