Georgia's state ballet company will present a national premiere of the celebrated ballet Sarabande by famous Czech contemporary choreographer Jiri Kylian.

The ballet will be performed within a program of four works by the acclaimed artist next month.

The Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre ballet company (State Ballet of Georgia) announced the premiere would be held on May 14 and 15 at the central Tbilisi venue.

On these two evening dancers will also perform three other Kylian ballets - Falling Angels, Petite Mort and Sechs Taenze – which are already in the company's repertoire.

The Theatre's artistic director David Kintsurashvili will conduct Opera House’s orchestra for the two shows.

Sarabande was created by Kylian in 1990 for the Netherlands Dance Theatre – the troupe he was closely associated with.

Photographs from the stage rehearsal of Sarabande at the Opera and Ballet State Theatre were released by the Tbilisi ballet company in November last year.

The images showed the dancers make use of the Theatre's upgraded and re-equipped scene before the venue officially reopened after a six-year renovation effort on January 30 this year.

A preview of the upcoming performances said the Kylian program would showcase the Czech choreographer’s "innovative, modern, creative, deep and even provocative choreography”.

Kylian, a laureate of various national and international awards, is a Czech former dancer and now an acclaimed contemporary choreographer. His ballets are often sought after by international ballet troupes, and in recent years Kylian worked as a freelance artist around the globe.

The State Ballet of Georgia has hosted Tbilisi premieres of the Czech artist's ballets over the past eight years.

The Tbilisi troupe staged Sechs Taenze - a comedy piece based on music by Austrian classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) - in 2008, followed by premieres of Falling Angels in 2009 and Petite Mort in 2013.
