The Central African Republic Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) is thanking Georgia for its soldiers’ participation in the peacekeeping mission in Africa.
Ambassador Ambroisine Kpongo met Georgia’s Foreign Minister Tamar Beruchashvili at the UN headquarters in New York City.
The African diplomat said the Georgian military peacekeepers’ contribution to providing security in the region was "highly appreciated".
She also thanked the Georgian peacekeepers for establishing a "warm and friendly relationship” with the local population.
The African and Georgian sides expressed their readiness to continue collaboration in the future.
The Georgian military peacekeepers returned home in March after spending several months serving in the Central African Republic.
The UN-mandated EU peacekeeping mission, commonly referred to as EUFOR RCA, is based in Bangui and the goal of the mission is to stabilise the area after more than a year of internal conflict.
An agreement about the mission was reached in January 2014 and the first operations stated at the end of April.
In this mission, the task of the Georgian soldiers was to provide security, involving infantry and motorised patrolling, within their area of responsibility in Bangui, the country’s capital. The Georgian side accomplished their mission successfully and returned home without casualties.
