Georgia gains first success in Women’s EURO 2017 competition

Georgia is celebrating after the country’s national women’s football team placed top of their pool and progressed to the qualifying stage of the UEFA Women's EURO 2017 championship.

The team enjoyed two wins and one loss in the preliminary competition, but gained enough points to see it progress to the next stage of the prestigious European competition, which will be held in the Netherlands in July and August.

The team, coached by Tamaz Kostava, defeated Faroe Islands 2-nil, convincingly beat Andorra 7-nil and lost to Malta 2-1, and finished with six points. Malta and Faroe Islands also gained six points, however goal difference saw the Georgian side place top of the pool ad progress to the next stage of the competition.

Georgia, having secured one point at its only previous appearance in top-level qualifiers for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, now awaits the April 20 reveal of the group stage draw.

Looking ahead, the female footballers will play home and away games between September 2015 and October 2016 in eight matches against some of Europe's leading nations.
