Georgia’s birth rate increases

More babies are being born in Georgia, statistics reveal.

About 60,000 babies were born in Georgia in 2014, which was a five percent increase on 2013 figures. 

Latest statistics released by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), noted the birth rate in Georgia was steadily increasing.

On another note, Georgia’s Public Defender said in his 2014 report that the country’s abortion rate was decreasing in almost all age groups in 2014.

Ombudsman Ucha Nanuashvili presented his annual report to Georgia’s Parliament for further discussion.

The report said 37,000 abortions were reported in Georgia in 2013. In 2014 this number had dropped slightly to 31,908.

The largest number of abortions were reported in capital Tbilisi (11,938), followed by the Imereti region (4,903), the Shida Kartli region (3,835) and the Adjara region (3,629).

Last year the Georgian Government offered a monthly allowance to parents of multiple children as a way to increase the country's birth rate. The move aimed to resolve demographic problems in the country, officials said at the time.
