US memorial service for Georgian cadet car crash victims

The United States (US) Coast Guard Academy has honoured the two Georgian military cadets who died in a tragic car accident in the US last month.

A memorial ceremony in honour of first class cadet Soso Makaridze and third class cadet Besarion Gorjoladze was held at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London yesterday, April 1.

The families of the two victims, Georgian and US officials, about a thousand cadets and invited guests paid their respects at the memorial ceremony.

The service was recorded and can be viewed on the US Coast Guard Academy website.

Makaridze and Gorjoladze were in a vehicle that lost control while traveling on icy roads in New Jersey on March 8.

The men’s bodies were returned to Georgia and a public funeral service was held on March 10 at Kashveti Church.

Makaridze and Gorjoladze were studying at the US Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut.

Makaridze was a fourth year student and had been studying in the US since 2011. Meanwhile Gorjoladze, a second year student, entered the US Coast Guard Academy in 2013.
