Wrestling European Championship: Georgians win 9 medals

Georgia’s Under 23 wrestling team are celebrating after winning nine medals at the European U23 Wrestling Championship.
The Georgian team returned home from Poland, the championship venue, with three gold, two silver and four bronze medals.
This result saw the Georgians rank second among all the nations who participated in the event.
Of the nine medals, five were won by the Georgian freestyle wrestlers while the remaining four went to the Georgian Greco-Roman wrestlers.
The freestyle winners were:
- Zurab Erbotsonashvili (74kg) – gold medal;
- Omar Gusoshvili (97kg) – gold medal;
- Zurab Iakobishvili (65kg) – silver medal;
- Giorgi Meshvildishvili (125kg) – silver medal;
- Beka Bujiashvili (57kg) – bronze medal.
The medal winning Greco-Roman wrestlers were:
- Lasha Gobadze (80kg) – gold medal;
- Khvicha Tchitanava (59) – bronze medal;
- Giorgi Davitaia (66kg) – bronze medal;
- Kukuri Kirtskhalia (98kg) – bronze medal.
The sport of Georgian wrestling – Chidaoba – will be preserved in history as the country looks to grant the sport with the status of ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’.
Georgian wrestlers have won six gold and four bronze medals at the Golden Grand Prix de Paris Seine Ouest in France.
Georgia’s junior Greco-Roman wrestlers have triumphed at the 2015 Junior Wrestling World Championships in Brazil.
Georgia has won one gold and one silver medal at the first day of the Cadet Wrestling World Championships in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
For the first time in eight years, a Georgian athlete has been crowned world wrestling champion.
