The United Nations (UN) has launched a campaign in Georgia to raise awareness of women’s rights and enhance gender equality in Georgia.

Today marked the first day of Gender Week – an initiative by the UN in Georgia – that is being marked all around the country.

UN in Georgia resident coordinator Niels Scott encouraged everyone to participate in Gender Week activities.

Achieving gender equality in every aspect of life will lead us to the world where men and women can equally exercise their choices, such as participating in politics, getting an education, having an income, and living in societies free from violence and discrimination.

The initiative was born about 20 years ago when 17,000 participants and 30,000 activists streamed into Beijing for the opening of the Fourth World Conference on Women, in September 1995. The group was remarkably diverse, coming from around the globe, but they had a single purpose in mind: gender equality and the empowerment of all women, everywhere.

To continue this global action, UN Women launched a year-long campaign to reenergize the vision laid out at the Beijing Women's Conference.

Under the global UN theme ‘Empowering Women – Empowering Humanity: Picture It!’, Gender Week in Georgia celebrates the action taken to ensure gender parity and encourage future change in areas where gender inequality remains evident.

Gender Week in Georgia events are taking place today and will continue for two weeks until March 16 in Tbilisi and the regions of Georgia.

Gender Week is organised by the United Nations Office in Georgia, along with the Government, Parliament, civil society, the private sector and international partners operating in Georgia.
