Tbilisi hosts world chess Grand Prix

For the first time in Georgia’s chess history, capital city Tbilisi is hosting the world Grand Prix 2014-2015 – one of the world’s most prestigious chess events.

The World Chess Federation’s Grand Prix 2014-15 is a series of four chess tournaments that form part of the qualification cycle for the World Chess Championship 2016.

Tbilisi is currently hosting one of the four tournaments, which is taking place from February 14-18.

The world’s 12 strongest chess players are participating in the Tbilisi Grand Prix. Georgia is being represented by Grandmaster Baadur Jobava.

The other nations who feature in the tournament are Russia (five players), Azerbaijan (two players) and the Netherlands, France, Cuba and Uzbekistan (one player).

Winners of each of the four Grand Prix events will receive a share of €120,000 prize money.
