A local company is introducing electronic bicycles into Georgia as an alternative mode of transport that will reduce carbon emissions, help citizens avoid traffic jams and improve healthy living.
A handful of locals have already got their hands on the first shipment of Chinese-made bicycles, which are fitted with a motor to boost pedal-power, and they are already feeling the benefits.
The company importing the bikes into Georgia, Ebike.ge, claimed the motorised bikes could be extremely beneficial for a country like Georgia, which suffered from air pollution due to vehicle emissions and huge traffic jams.
Company representative Giorgi Buchukuri told Agenda.ge the motorised bicycles had ecological benefits, as it could contribute to decreased number of vehicles on the roads. He noted if enough people swapped their cars for one of these bicycles, which were fitted with a motor to boost pedal-power, vehicle emissions could drop to more acceptable levels.
The initiative also had health benefits, as it encouraged citizens to get more active. And when users were tired, the motor would assist them on their journey.
Initially Ebike.ge brought 10 electronic bikes into the local market, six of which have already been sold. If demand continued, Ebike.ge planned to import about 50 motorised bicycles by next spring.
Buchukuri noted there were no cycle ways or appropriate infrastructure for local bike users in Tbilisi and most other parts of the country, and awareness of cyclists’ presence on the roads was low.
He believed Ebike.ge, together with Tbilisi City Hall and local municipalities, could develop infrastructure to allow Georgian users to ride electronic bikes safely and raise awareness of cyclists’ rights on the road.
The price of a motorised bicycle from Ebike.ge ranged from $800-900 USD.
