Swiss cinema enthusiasts are invited to see Georgia’s award-winning and Oscar-nominated filmCorn Island.

The film, directed by Giorgi Ovashvili, is being screened in cinemas across Switzerland after continuing its successful run of collecting prizes at European festivals and contests.

From today Georgia’s 2015 Oscar bid for Best Foreign Language Film will be shown for German and Italian-speaking audiences for one week, while Switzerland’s French community will be able to see the production from February 3 next year.

Ovashvili’s film – about the struggle between man and nature – was described by website hollywoodreporter.com as a "master class in emotionally charged minimalism”. Over the next week Corn Island will be shown in cinemas in the Swiss cities of Bern, Luzern, Wettingen and Zürich.

Since the film’s release in 2014, Corn Island has gained many awards. This year alone the film claimed the Grand Prix at the Karlovy Vary International Festival in Czech Republic, Best Direction and Best Female Character prizes at the San Marino International Festival and the main Golden Antigone prize at the Montpellier International Festival.

Corn Island opened the international section of the Terra di Siena Film Festival in Italy in September before rounding off its Italian tour.

A collaborative production of Georgia, Germany, Kazakhstan, the Czech Republic, France and Hungary, Corn Island was Georgia’s nominee for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, held in February 2015. The awards recognised the best films released in 2014.
