The Government of Georgia is planning to invest just over 10 million GEL to build a new road connecting two villages in Khevsureti region to reduce migration from the village and promote tourism in the area.

The historical Khevsureti area is regarded as one of the most mysterious regions in the Greater Caucasus because of its remoteness and natural beauty.

The Government said it would invest 10.9 million GEL to build a 28km stretch of road connecting Roshka and Arkhoti villages.

The new Roshka-Arkhoti Road was due to open in 2017 to allow dozens of local families to return to their homes.

Officials from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development explained Arkhoti village was being deserted by locals because of road problems.

Currently only four families lived in the village – however only two families remained there during the cold winter months.

Officials said the only possible ways to move through the territory was by walking on foot, riding a horse or flying a helicopter.

The Government believed the new road could revive Khevsureti region and contribute to tourism development there.
