A Georgian theatre’s staging of an ancient Greek tragedy in Poland has drawn praise by reviewers.

The performance of Women of Troy by Tbilisi-based Royal District Theatre gained top ratings by the audience in Gdansk.

Performing arts review website Plays to See called the performance "stunningly beautiful” and gave it a perfect five-star rating after their show at the Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre on October 11.

The theatre portal review said the close arrangement of the stage to the audience played a significant part in bonding the performers and viewers while sharing the theme of women in conflict.

Intimacy is the primary and one of the most important characteristics of the production. There is no evident barrier between the five young actresses and the audience who sit in close proximity to performance space. Moreover, the women very often talk directly to the audience and, as such, they themselves become the audience at times,” said Aleksandra Kotapska in her review for the website.

Kotapska also noted how Tavadze managed to convey the suffering of women in wartime even when they escape death, and praised the five young performers for finding "the balance between raw emotions and restraint”.

Plays to See shared its impressions of the play to its Twitter followers:

The staging by director Data Tavadze was based on the 5thCentury BC tragedy by Greek playwright Euripides.

The Royal District Theatre held the performance at the Shakespeare Theatre during the Georgian Culture Week celebration in the city that also featured film screenings, exhibitions and other events.

The Theatre is set to perform the play at their own venue in Tbilisi on October 28 and 30.
