The Goethe Institute Georgia hosted a conference today about the Unite for a Sustainable Future project that aims to assist teachers plan environmental projects and integrate relevant issues in their natural, humanitarian and social majors.

The Tbilisi branch of the German government’s international culture organisation hosted the event where experts from Germany, Austria and Switzerland spoke about a range of topics involving sustainable development, agriculture and more.

The project involves a series of workshops in Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia on environmental issues, while local teachers in Georgia will be assisted as they prepare their projects by agriculture and environment students from Austria, who will travel to Georgia specifically to help.

Financed by Germany’s Foreign Ministry, the project aims to support UNESCO’s global Education for Sustainable Development program, ratified by the Georgian Government.

The first stage of the program a summer camp for German language teachers in Georgia was held for a week in July in the country’s seaside resort Kvariati. More activities involved eight-day seminars on integrating environmental subjects in German language courses.

During future stages the Unite for a Sustainable Future initiative will feature further conferences, seminars and publication of a book on teaching methodology for future educators.

The project’s final conference will be held at the Goethe Institute in December, with reviews of individual sub-projects as well as feasibility of long-term impact of the program.
