Georgia is celebrating.

The nation's football team beat Scotland - ranked 116 places above the Caucasian side - last night in an important match in Georgia's capital Tbilisi.

The game, which ended in a 1-0 victory for the home side, was held at Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena in front of a crowd of energetic locals and Scots, who had travelled to Georgia to watch the match.

The Georgian team played a strong game; they played cohesively and in unison that put the opposition under pressure.

The game was a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier match. The only goal was scored in the 38th minute by Vitesse Arnhem midfielder Valeri Kazaishvili.

At a press conference after the game Georgia’s head coach Kakha Tskhadadze said his team played well now it was extremely important for them to maintain this "high spirit" in the future.

The home side defended brilliantly but Scotland didn’t get a single shot on target.

Georgia defeated Scotland in a Euro qualifier match in Tbilisi in 2007 too. Last night’s game saw history repeat itself, with Georgia’s second choice keeper in goal, not being tested the entire night.

After the match Georgia gained six points but they still remained second from the bottom in Group D.

Looking ahead the team will travel to Ireland to play their next match on September 7.
