Georgia’s top-ranking tennis player has gained the right to compete in the main draw of Wimbledon – one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world – after achieving three victories in the qualifying round.
Today Nikoloz Basilashvili took on Hungary’s Martin Fucsovic and defeated him with a score of 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Basilashvili is currently ranked 153rd in the world.
In previous days during qualifying matches he defeated Uzbekistan’s Farrukh Dustov, who ranked 21 places higher in world rankings, and Romania’s Victor Hanescu.
The victories saw Basilashvili jump 25 places on the world ranking scale and earned him a place among 128 males who will compete in the first round of the Wimbledon championship.
This is the first time Basilashvili will compete in the prestigious tennis tournament.
Earlier this year Basilashvili claimed his second ATP Challenger Tour crown at the Electra Israel Open.
