The nationwide celebration of Georgia’s Independence Day has reached the country’s occupied Abkhazia region.

Georgia’s national anthem performed in the Abkhazian language was shared across social media yesterday as the country celebrated its 97th anniversary of independence.

The anthem was translated into Abkhazian in respect of the Georgian Constitution, which stated Georgia’s state language was Georgian however in the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, the state language is also Abkhazian.

The idea to translate the national anthem into Abkhazian was initiated by the Institute of Georgian-Abkhazian Relations and executed by Institute employee Esma Kokoskeria.

Georgia’s national anthem was first performed in Abkhazian language on November 12, 2006, when the Institute organised an Abkhazian Day at the Ethnographic Museum in Tbilisi.
