Georgian-directed 'Tangerines' leads Spanish box office

Tangerines has won 15 international film awards at six international festivals since it was released in 2013.

Tangerines, a war-time drama by a Georgian director is continuing to impress across the globe.

After its success in the United States (US), the film now leads the Spanish box office.

Since its first screening last weekend, Tangerines had the largest number of viewers in the majority of cinemas in Spain.

Estonia-Georgia co-production Tangerines was nominated for an Oscar as one of the best foreign language films this year.

The film, directed by Georgian man Zaza Urushadze, centres around an older Estonian man who cares for two wounded soldiers from opposite sides of the 1990-era war in Georgia.

Tangerines was produced by Estonian film production company Allfilm and Georgian production company Cinema 24. As well as directing, Urushadze jointly produced the film with Ivo Felt. The cast includes Lembit Ulfsak, Elmo Nuganen, Mikhail Meskhi, Giorgi Nakashidze, Raivo Trass and Zurab Bealishvili.

Since its release the film has won awards at the Warsaw, Mannheim-Heidelberg, Palm Springs and Seattle film festivals.
