A Canadian Embassy is one step closer to opening in Georgia after authorities from both countries discussed the concept at the 2014 Nuclear Security Summit in the Netherlands.
Georgia’s Government expressed eagerness to open a Canadian Embassy in Tbilisi at a meeting with Canada’s Prime Minister Stephеn Harper on yesterday.
The proposal was discusses within a meeting between members of the Georgian delegation including Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze at The Hague.
Panjikidze said the Georgian Government was waiting for the next stage of political consultations between the two country’s Foreign Ministries, and Georgia would be glad to open a Canadian Embassy.
Garibashvili believed the negotiations emphasized the importance of a partnership between two countries and the Government would not spare any effort to deepen their relationship with Canada.
The Georgian Prime Minister thanked his Canadian counterpart for supporting the non-recognition policy, offering strong support for Georgia’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. Garibashvili also invited Harper to Georgia.
Currently, the Embassy of Canada in Turkey represents the interests of Canadian people in Georgia.
Meanwhile Georgia opened an embassy in Ottawa, Canada, in August 2011.
