A five-time gold medal American paralympian is on a special visit to Georgia to speak with the country’s youth.
U.S. Paralympian Candace Cable has won nine gold medals in five Summer Paralympic Games and three medals in the Winter Paralympic Games.
"She is a world-class athlete and an eloquent spokesperson for persons with disabilities. Ms. Cable’s YouTube video series has helped thousands of people with disabilities lead more active lives,” the U.S. embassy said in its written statement today.
Today, Cable and US Ambassador to Georgia, Richard Norland, are scheduled to meet Georgian youth at the country’s Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs.
During her visit to Georgia, Cable will also meet with Georgian paralympians, non-governmental organisations that support individuals with disabilities, university students, and cadets at the Military Academy in Gori.
After her visit to Georgia, Cable will visit Armenia before traveling to Sochi to work as a reporter for the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.
The Paralympic Games occur immediately after the Olympic Games and utilize the same venues.
Cable was involved in a motor vehicle accident in 1975 when she was 21 years old. The accident left her wheelchair-bound but she has overcome many obstacles and is one of the world's leading wheelchair racing athletes.
