Almost 2,000 families living in rural Georgia are now supplied with natural gas for the first time.

Azerbaijani gas distribution company SOCAR Georgia Gas built a 42km gas pipe in Ruisi village in central Georgia’s Shida Kartli region allowing more than 1,900 families in the village to connect to the main pipeline and access natural gas.

To mark the occasion, Georgia’s Vice Prime Minister and Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze and company representatives lighted the first gas oven in Ruisi today.

In the Shida Kartli region, more than 11, 640 families were connected with gas when SOCAR Georgia Gas built a 314km pipe earlier this year.

Under the plan developed by Georgia’s Energy Ministry and the gas company, more than 86,000 families in 252 villages will be connected to the main gas supply by the end of this year.

Once the central pipe was built in a village, families must pay up to 600 GEL to ensure their home was connected to the gas main. The gas distribution company allowed users to spread payments out and pay 25 GEL per month.
