The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon is extending his sincere condolences to the family of Eduard Shevardnadze, the Georgian Government and the people of Georgia as they prepare to farewell their second president.

The UN Secretary General released a statement to express his condolences on the death of former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze.

"The Secretary General recalls Eduard Shevardnadze’s significant contribution as Foreign Minister of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on the international stage and his efforts to overcome the divisions of the Cold War, including through advocating for nuclear disarmament at the United Nations,” the statement said.

Shevardnadze, who was Georgia's second president and Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union, passed away yesterday afternoon at his Tbilisi house after a long illness. He was 86 years old.
