The ruling Georgian Dream (GD) coalition appear to be the favourite political party in Georgia’s capital city, preliminary official results from yesterday’s election reveal.

GD coalition candidates won in 24 districts out of 25 single-mandate constituencies across Tbilisi, stated election authorities.

Figures released by the Central Election Commission at 3pm today stated most of the Tbilisi votes had been counted and results showed GD candidates won in all but one electorate.

Independent candidate Aleksanrde Elisashvili won the majoritarian race for Saburtalo District N03.05.

Early results for Tbilisi City Council, Sakrebulo, party-list proportional contest showed GD were ahead with 45.92 percent of votes, followed by United National Movement (UNM), with 26.18 percent of votes.

Two other parties which managed to clear the four percent threshold needed to take party-list seats in the Tbilisi Sakrebulo are: Nino Burjanadze’s United Opposition (10.35 percent) and Alliance of Patriots of Georgia, which gained slightly more than 6.34 percent of votes.

These initial results were based on votes counted at 696 Tbilisi election precincts, out of Tbilisi’s total 729 polling stations.

Half of the seats in the 50-member Tbilisi Sakrebulo (City Council) are distributed by the party-list, proportional contest and the remaining 25 seats are distributed among the majoritarian candidates, who win the race in the capital city’s 25 single-mandate constituencies.

GD is likely to win more than two-thirds of majority of the seats.
