Historical costumes that are now forgotten treasures of Georgian theatre are being uncovered from their resting places to be preserved online.
A range of historical theatre garb from theatres across the country will be collected, evaluated and photographed before being added to an online database where the attire will be preserved and admired from people all around the world.
The Cultural Development Center of Tbilisi Hall came up with the project, which aimed to give life to Georgia’s unique, historical costumes dating back to the first half of the 20th Century. Some of the outfits were found in a wardrobe at the Kote Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre and Shota Rustaveli State Academic Theatre.
The project’s goal was to create a complete online history of Georgian theatrical costumes from the first half of the 20th Century. The online database would also include sketches, paintings and costume plans, created by legendary actors and artists of this period.
"The project will provide a public collection of historical costumes, which has been stored in theatre wardrobes for years, and are unknown to the wider public,” the Cultural Development Center said.
The Centre is planning to hold an exhibition of the work to allow the public to see the ancient theatre clothing and immerse themselves in the past.
