Voter turnout increases twofold by 3pm

Almost a million voters around the country have put pen to paper and voted in the 2014 municipal elections.

More than 400,000 voters visited polling stations between 12pm and 3pm today, latest figures from the Central Election Commission (CEC) revealed.

As of 3pm, 992,712 voters, or 28.94 percent of eligible voters had cast their ballot in today’s Elections of Representative and Executive Bodies of Local Municipalities.

In total there are 3,429,748 registered voters in Georgia, said CEC spokesperson Eka Arazashvili.

The highest number of voters come from western Georgia’s Racha-Lechkumi region (47 percent), followed by Guria (41 percent).

CEC said the lowest voter turnout of registered voters was in Tbilisi, with 23.8 percent.

Voting will end at 8pm tonight.

Meanwhile voter turnout for the 2013 Presidential Election at 3pm was slightly higher than today’s election, with 32 percent of voters in 2013 compared to 28.94 percent today.
