Georgia’s participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations is being discussed between Georgia’s Defence Minister and United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations at the UN headquarters in New York.

Georgia's Minister of Defence Irakli Alasania and Edmond Mulet spoke about the deployment of Georgian soldiers to the troubled Central African region to take part in a European Union (EU) military peacekeeping mission.

"Georgia's troops will join peacekeeping troops help combat the horrific spiral of sectarian violence in the Central African Republic. It will be the nation’s first contribution to an EU Security and Defence Mission and its first operation in Africa,” Alasania said from New York following yesterday's meeting.

Alasania said he and Mulet discussed what kind of logistic support the Georgia’s troops would need in order to accomplish the mission successfully and return home safely.

Earlier this year Georgian authorities confirmed 150 soldiers would be sent to the Central African Republic to take part in the EU military peacekeeping mission.

Georgia's troops will join French and African troops help combat the horrific spiral of sectarian violence in the Central African Republic.

Alasania also believed Georgia would continue participating in the peacekeeping mission in Central Africa as blue-helmet peacekeepers.

"After meeting with the Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations at the United Nations we now have a clear vision of what kind of mission it will be in Central Africa,” Alasania said.

The Defence Minister also informed the UN representative about Georgia’s willingness to participate in the post-African peacekeeping mission to train, advise and assist Afghan security forces once the country's authorities resumed security responsibility of the nation.

Georgia is currently the largest non-NATO troop contributor to the ISAF mission in Afghanistan.
