International observer group assesses pre-election environment

The delegation plans to meet several parties during its monitoring of the pre-electoral environment.

A group of international observers have arrived in Georgia to observe the pre-election environment ahead of the local government elections scheduled for June 15.

A delegation representing the National Democratic Institute (NDI) arrived in Georgia today.

The delegation members include former head of the EU delegation to Georgia Per Eklund, ex-head of the US House of Representatives International Relations Committee and former NDI board member Sam Gejdenson, International expert on Elections and Democracy for Democracy Reporting International (DRI) and Electoral Reform International Services (ERIS) Robert Adams, Director of Eurasian regional NDI programs Laura Jewett and Director of the Georgian NDI office Luis Navaro.

The delegation have plans to meet Government representatives, electoral candidates, political party leaders, election administration members, community members and international organization representatives.

After this, the group are tasked with assessing the electoral preparation, political activities of the major actors and the electoral environment in general.

On May 2 after the delegation has finished its work, NDI will present a report about its core findings after observing the pre-electoral environment at a press conference.
