Georgian Khachapuri is gaining worldwide popularity and delighting the taste-buds of American locals living in Washington D.C.

The unique Georgian cheese-filled bread often topped with egg and butter was named "Dish of the Week” by the Washington Post newspaper.

In today’s edition of the city’s most prominent and widely circulated newspaper, it stated Khachapuri was being sold at a newly-opened ethnic restaurant.

The Compass Rose restaurant featured a variety of international street food with particular emphasis on a global selection of sidewalk snacks. The eatery opened last week in the American capital.

The traditional Georgian dish cost $14 there.

The American news outlet even noted an interesting way to eat the Georgian dish.

"Owner Rose Previte recommends ripping off the bread and dipping it in the middle as you go,” the Washington Post wrote.

This variation of Khachapuri is called ‘Adjarian’ however the most common variety in Georgia is ‘Imeruli’. The types of Khachapuri differ from region to region.

The photo accompanying the Washington Post article showed Khachapuri sprinkled with basil. It appeared this was an American addition as the dish is traditionally served without herbs.
