School resource officer saved students’ lives

Georgian Minister of Education and Science Tamar Sanikidze visited the resource officer at hospital who was injured in the fire at Public School #158.

Beka Metreveli, 24, was intoxicated when he was evacuating children from the school building. After the first aid, he was transferred to the referral hospital.

The fire in the school occurred on December 16, about 10 minutes after the first class started. The fire is said to be caused by a short circuit in the computer classroom. Resource officers managed to rescue students and the school staff before the emergency service and fire brigades came.

Safe School Concept initiated by the Ministry of Education envisages crisis management course which covers the topics on the evacuation of pupils and school personnel in the period of natural disasters, such asa fire, earthquake and flood, according to the Ministry.
