The United Nations World Tourism Organisation has named northwest Georgia's highland town of Mestia among its Best Tourism Villages of the past year.

Described as the “cleanest tourism region in Georgia”, Mestia is shown to be situated in a picturesque natural surrounding, with a rich history and ethnography.

The profile also notes state support for the development of ecological and agritourism in a bid of raising quality standards, through efforts including the Micro and Small Business Support programme for its community to “diversify regional goods and services”.
