The Investigation Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia arrested six individuals for illegal storage, transportation and selling of excise-free tobacco products in the country in December, the state body said on Friday.
In detailing figures related to tobacco offences last year, the Service said it had found the offenders had sold 18,052 packages of excise-free cigarettes worth over ₾90,000 ($33,714). The crime is punishable by between six to eight years in prison.
The body also added it had launched investigation into 326 cases of selling excise-free tobacco products throughout 2022.
During the year, 587,655 packages of the product worth ₾3 million ($1,1 mln) were also seized.
