Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has gifted a unique and hand-painted edition of the Georgian medieval 12th Century epic poem The Knight in the Panther’s Skin by Shota Rustaveli to the United Nations (UN).
The hand-painted edition of the poem is located on the second floor of the UN headquarters in New York City, close to where the meetings of the UN Security Council are held.
It is a great honour and privilege for me to participate in this historic event. We are giving a gift to the UN and I am very honoured to do it officially,” stated Garibashvili.

PM Garibashvili also thanked the UN for the support of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The UN Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support Atul Khare stated that ‘the Georgian national treasury will be a source of inspiration for visitors from all over the world.’
The values left by Shota Rustaveli in the literary monument of the 12th-century friendship and humanity are still relevant for the United Nations. The gift is strong proof that Georgia is committed to friendship between nations, peace, freedom and of course international cooperation,” said Atul Khare.
The engraved cover of a literary monument is created by well-known sculptor and goldsmith Elgudja Amashukeli, known to the world by the brand name Goudji and is made of silver and uses more than 20 gemstones. The unique edition of the prominent Georgian poem is illustrated by Sophio and Tamaz Varvaridze and the text is written by five Georgian leading calligraphers. Photo: Government of Georgia.
The UN Under-Secretary-General Khare presented the postage stamp of Shota Rustaveli to PM Garibashvili issued in 2018 by the UN Department of Postage Stamps and Numismatics on the poet’s 850th anniversary.

Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Georgia to the UN Kakha Imnadze underscored the significance of the event and stated that it ‘emphasises the importance of Georgia.’
This is very good news for Georgia because a lot of people go to the UN as an official delegation, as well as just guests or tourists. They have special tours and of course, they are looking at these gifts,” Imnadze said.
Georgian delegation led by PM Garibashvili is attending the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York which is the main policy-making body of the organisation and hosts world leaders at its headquarters annually.
