Healthcare official says community transmission minimised in Georgia

Head of Tbilisi Infectious Disease Hospital Tengiz Tsertsvadze says there are almost no new cases of community transmission of COVID-19 in Georgia.
We have somehow dealt with the community transmission, but not completely… we have managed to overcome the most dangerous threat [and] avoided dramatic increase of new cases”, Tsertsvadze stated.
Tsertsvadze earlier noted that the rate of coronavirus infection is currently decreasing in the country.
In order to preserve the ‘positive trend’ Tsertsavdze calls on citizens to:
- Wash hands frequently
- Avoid public gatherings
- Maintain social distancing
- Use face masks in closed spaces

Nevertheless, some citizens continue to violate the state of emergency regulations. In particular, police have fined 87 individuals during the last 24 hours throughout the country.
- 83 individuals were fined for violating the curfew regulations;
- 3 individuals for violating rules of transportation and driving;
- 1 individuals were fined for public gathering and violating 2-meter distance.
The Interior Ministry calls on everyone to follow the regulations of the state of emergency, otherwise individuals will face a fine of 3,000 GEL, while legal entities will face a fine of 15,000 GEL.

Georgia's Russian-occupied Abkhazia region has also reported three new cases of the virus earlier today, increasing the total number of cases to 13 now.
Georgia has a total of 626 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 297 recoveries and ten deaths, which the Head of Tbilisi Infectious Disease Hospital Tengiz Tsertsvadze says is ‘one of the best’ results in Europe. Director of the First University Clinic Levan Ratiani also stated yesterday that ‘this entire mess will end soon but we will have to continue living with this virus’.
Georgian epidemiologists say they are proud of the feedback they have received from the US government’s top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, who said Georgia is coping well with the coronavirus pandemic in a letter sent to the Head of Tbilisi Infectious Disease Hospital Tengiz Tsertsvadze.
Head of the Georgian National Centre for Disease Control Amiran Gamkrelidze has again called on the citizens to stay home, avoid public gatherings and maintain social distancing to avoid the further spread of the virus amid the upcoming religious celebrations.
Georgia ranks 109th worldwide and 50th in Europe in terms of the spread of COVID-19 and mortalities caused by the coronavirus, which is the one of the best results across the globe, head of Tbilisi Hospital of Infectious Diseases Tengiz Tsertsvadze said. Georgia has had 195 cases of the coronavirus since February 2020. 39 of the 195 have recovered. Two of the 195 have died of the virus so far, while two others were foreign citizens who left the country last month.
Georgia has reported five new cases of coronavirus earlier today, bringing the total number of cases to 647. 372 of the 647 patients have recovered, while 11 others have died. As of April 13, 264 individuals remain infected with COVID-19. Almost 32,000 people have been tested for COVID-19 in the country since February 2020. The coronavirus infection rate continues to slow in Georgia, with the country reporting just five new cases earlier today. As of May 14, 257 people remain infected with COVID-19 in Georgia, while the figure was 264 yesterday. Since February 2020 Georgia has had 652 cases of the coronavirus. 383 of the 652 people have recovered and 12 others have died.
Georgia has tested 60, 273 people for coronavirus in Georgia between January 30 and June 3 with the use of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests, which is the ‘gold standard’ in testing the virus.
