The lead level in children’s blood and water quality were the main topics of the Intersectoral Coordination Council session headed by Georgian PM Mamuka Bakhtadze on March 26.

Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze said some Georgian regions are facing important environmental problems adding that water quality also remains one of the most important challenges.

All this requires active steps to be made by us,” PM Mamuka Bakhtadze said.

He also stated the blood lead level in children also represents an important challenge for the modern world.

We should focus on the recommendations issued by the WHO and apply the best practices western countries have accumulated,” Bakhtadze said.

Lead exposure is an important public health problem that causes cumulative toxicity in multiple body systems, Georgian National Center for Disease Control reports.

Children are particularly vulnerable to its neurotoxic effects.

As NCDC representative Lela Sturua stated no lead was observed in food and water according to the research conducted in 2017, netgazeti.ge reports.

In 2017 the New York City Department of Health warned Georgians that the spices sent from Georgia to the U.S. contained lead.
