Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani has held meetings with officials in Uruguay during his tour in Latin America from March 17-23.
David Zalkaliani also plans to visit Argentina during the tour.
At a meeting with Vice President and President of the Senate of Uruguay Lucia Topolansky, the parties praised Georgia-Uruguay amicable relations and the countries’ great potential for democratic development and economic progress.
Minister Zalkaliani expressed his gratitude for Uruguay’s support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He focused on Georgia’s plan for economic development and European integration, as well as Georgia’s transit function and infrastructural projects.
Minister Zalkaliani also met with the President of the Chamber of Representatives of Uruguay Cecilia Bottino.
The parties discussed issues of sustainable development and human rights protection, and stressed that Georgia is a successful country as it properly carries out the UN Sustainable Development Goal 16 on the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.

The parties said it is very pleasant that the cultural events in relation to the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Uruguay are scheduled.
David Zalkaliani also held a meeting with the Chair of the Friendship Group of Georgia at the House of Representatives of Uruguay, Senator Monica Xavier.
The parties emphasized efficient cooperation between the legislative authorities of the countries.
Uruguayan Senator Monica Xavier showed interest in the reforms Georgia has conducted in the healthcare and education system, as well as the Georgian prime minister’s recent initiative to allocate 6% of the GDP to education by 2022.
David Zalkaliani provided Monica Xavier with information on Georgia’s EU integration process and economic prospects ensured by the Free Trade Agreement with the EU and other countries.
The conversation also referred to human rights violation cases in Georgia’s occupied territories.
Uruguay's support towards Georgia’s sovereignty was especially stressed.
David Zalkaliani will hold meetings with Argentina’s Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie and other officials during the tour. He will deliver a speech at the South-South Cooperation conference at Buenos Aires and meet with the foreign ministers of Latin American and African countries.
Meeting with the Georgian Diaspora in Uruguay and Argentina is also on the tour agenda.
