The United States Embassy to Georgia calls for “the immediate release” of Vazha Gaprindashvili, a well-known Georgian doctor and traumatologist, who was sentenced to two-month pretrial detention by de facto Tskhinvali authorities yesterday.
We reiterate our full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders”, the US Embassy said.
In its statement, the Embassy also called on Russia “to reverse its recognition of the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states”.
In further called for “the immediate end to closures of the crossing points along the administrative boundary line” as well.

The US Embassy US Embassy further urged Russia to fulfill all of its obligations under the 2008 ceasefire agreement, including the withdrawal of its forces to pre-conflict positions and provision of free access for humanitarian assistance to these regions.
The de facto Tskhinvali government closed crossing points with the rest of Georgia in early September, causing severe humanitarian situation on the ground.
Two individuals have dead due to delayed medical aid as a result.
