Tourist season has officially opened in Georgia's Black Sea town of Batumi.
The Batumi beach, located in the country’s west, is the main summer destination for Georgian and foreign visitors.
For the first time, 20 female lifeguards will patrol Batumi coast this summer together with their male colleagues, to prevent incidents and help those in danger.

Known for its diverse landscape - Batumi has seen wider recognition of its tourist potential over the past few years, including in Airbnb's '19 destinations to visit in 2019' list.
The town has recently received the title of ‘Europe’s Leading Emerging Tourism Destination’.
It has been selected by The New York Times as one of 52 locations to visit this year as well.

The seaside town has become the first municipality in the country to receive the title of European City of Sport for 2019.
A number of air companies, including Polish Enter Air, Saudi Arabia’s Flynas, as well as Ukrainian SkyUP and Azerbaijani Buta Airways, have also launched flights to Batumi.
Tourist season has opened in other seaside resorts of western Georgia as will. Kobuleti, Shekvetili, Ureki, Kvariati and Sarpi are also Georgia's among most visited resorts in summer.
Lifeguards have saved a 29-year-old local man from drowning in Makhinjauri, in the Georgian region of Adjara today. The Emergency Management Service reports the man was swimming in the sea during a magnitude 3 storm when a passer-by saw him and called for lifeguards.
A 3-4 magnitude storm has hit the coastal regions of Georgia, and red flags have been put out on the beach to warn swimmers that conditions are dangerous. Rescuers worked all night long as heavy rain flooded the first floor of residential buildings along the Black Sea coastal regions in Georgia.
The Georgian Black Sea town of Batumi is celebrating the Day of Seafarer. Batumi is home to Georgia’s State Maritime Academy, where thousands of young men and women learn practical skills that can be put to use while working on ships that spend months at sea.
Georgia’s Black Sea resort town of Kobuleti is sporting a sturdier boardwalk this summer season. A 1.2 km section of Kobuleti’s boardwalk was restored and renovated to allow visitors to enjoy a better-protected beach as the old boardwalk was unable to hold back storm waves.
For a month starting this Sunday, folk arts enthusiasts will be invited to watch artist performances, taste local cuisine and find artisanal items exhibited at the Art-Gene Festival. The festival, aimed at presentation of Georgian folklore dates back 16 years. More than 100 concerts have been conducted during the period attended by approximately 30-40 thousand people every year.

Georgia's Black Sea town of Batumi received the title of ‘Europe’s Leading Emerging Tourism Destination’ at the World Travel Awards ceremony held in Madeira, Portugal last night. Baku (Azerbaijan), Derry (North Ireland), Kutná Hora (Czech Republic), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Matera (Italy), Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Sofia (Bulgaria) were competing Batumi in this nomination.
Closure of the Black Sea seaside areas is not expected at this point amid the coronavirus outbreak. The Chairman of the Government of Adjara Tornike Rijvadze noted that social distancing will be monitored on the beach.
