NATO PA declaration urges alliance leaders to back Georgia’s hope of joining NATO

Parliamentarians from the NATO nations have appealed for Alliance leaders on Monday to continue providing strong political and practical support to Georgia in the process of NATO integration and to advance the further political dimension of the country’s NATO membership process.
In a declaration at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Spring Session in Poland, lawmakers called on alliance leaders "to reaffirm the Allies’ condemnation of Russia’s illegal and illegitimate annexation of Crimea, the destabilisation of eastern Ukraine, and the ongoing occupation of Georgian and Ukrainian territories, and their unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and Ukraine in their internationally recognised borders.”
On the other hand the declaration urged alliance leaders to show unity at the Brussels summit in July and demonstrate that the organisation remains credible in the face of security threats headed by Russia and terrorism.
We will continue supporting Georgia which has all the tools needed to become a member of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg said in Warsaw while attending the spring session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly today.
As Congressman Gerald Connolly said, Georgia is exemplary in the regions with its independence, political pluralism and democratic governance gained in a neighborhood where autocracy and authoritarianism have taken root frequently.
The American general will attend the three year long Georgian Defence Readiness Program launch ceremony with the Defence Minister and also will participate in the opening of the Combat Training Center at the Vaziani military base.
The other topics discussed at the Security Council meeting included threats coming from the Russian Federation and its influence on the country’s security and defense, the increase of US and other partners’ support, as well as reforms in Georgia’s defense policy.
Attended by the Foreign Minister of Georgia Mikheil Janelidze, the President of the Chamber of Representatives of Belgium Siegfried Bracke and Deputy Secretary General of NATO Rose Gottemoeller, the event highlighted Georgia’s European aspirations, values and progress.
In anticipation Georgia's progress to be appropriately recognised at upcoming NATO summit in Brussels, President Margvelashvili has discussed steps made by the country towards Euro-Atlantic integration with Estonian leaders.
The new format of Georgia-EU relations will include a dialogue with the representation of the Prime Minister of Georgia and the President of the European Commission.

NATO has praised Georgia’s efforts to pursue peaceful conflict resolution in the context of the Geneva International Discussions, the only international format discussing Georgia’s conflict issues with Russia and the representatives of Georgia’s occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).
PM Bakhtadze says that the second round of the presidential elections will be held in accordance with the ‘highest standards’. Bakhtadze’s response followed the assessment of the former President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Rasa Jukneviciene.
